1969 Dodge Swinger concept heads to auction

Mecum will auction a Dodge model car in February for Kissimmee.

At the 1969 Chicago Auto Show the Dodge Dart Swinger 340 Concept was unveiled. It previews the Dodge Dart Swinger production model that will be available shortly thereafter as a trim for the compact Dart.

The concept was created by Alexander Brothers of Detroit. It is based upon a Dart but has many modifications. It appears that the roof is cut, with square Cibie headlights instead of round production parts, a pair fog lights at the middle of the grille and a Charger-like rear fascia. The auction listing states that a custom grille frame and hood scoop were used to inspire designs for production models.

Maroon Metallic is applied to the design with a black tail stripe, which was an iconic Mopar feature. The wheels are Ansen Sprint slots aluminum with Goodyear Polyglas tires. It is an idea car, hence the lack of windshield wipers as well as the capped-off washer reservoir.

A 340 cubic inch V-8 is responsible for the power. It has a 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust and 340 cubic inches of displacement. Similar engine was also used in production Dart Swinger. A 4-speed manual transmission is used with a Hurst shifter to send power to the rear wheels.

The Dodge Dart was around till the 1970s when the Aspen replaced it. Although the Dart was restored for the 2013 model-year, the 21st century model only survived to the 2016 model-year. Dodge produced a handful of concepts that were similar to the Swinger but, unlike the 1969 model, didn’t result in any production models.
