An AMG badge is a symbol of superior performance over a regular Mercedes-Benz. However, AMG has had a long history of a hierarchy in terms performance. The Black Series models are at the top of this hierarchy, and Tommy Kendall, a racing driver brought one of those earliest Black Series versions to Jay Leno’s famed garage.
While the 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series isn’t the only model to carry the Black Series logo (that went to the SLK 55 AMG Black Series), it was certainly the most popular. It was based on the C209-generation CLK coupe and featured huge fender flares as well as an upgraded suspension and brakes and a stronger engine.
Although the naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 is the same unit as the non-Black Series CLK63, its output was 500 horsepower instead of 475 HP. A 7-speed manual transmission transfers power to the rear wheels.

To save weight, the rear seats and power adjusters were taken out of the Black Series. However, the Black Series retains many of the same creature comforts as other CLK models. This was done with an additional dose of carbon fiber.
This car was followed by Black Series versions of the SL-Class Coupe and C-Class Coupe as well as the SLS AMG. This year’s model is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series. It boasts 720 horsepower and costs $326,050 including destination. Mercedes quotes 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and in 2020 the Black Series lapped the Nürburgring in 6:43.61.
The AMG GT Black Series’ 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V-8 is used in place of the CLK’s larger, naturally aspirated engine. Although the Black Series’ latest model is more powerful than its predecessor it can still be compared to its predecessor in power, however, you won’t find a better sounding non-turbo V-8.
