The Subaru Solterra, a new battery-electric crossover, is identical to the Toyota model, the BZ4X, which was jointly designed by the Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GR86. They will both be available in U.S. showrooms as mid-2022 models and 2023 versions.
While the BZ4X name signifies the Toyota as a member of a new BZ family of electric vehicles, the Solterra name is a combination of the Latin words for “sun” and “earth.” We got a chance to get up-close to the new electric SUV last week in advance of the show and even see the Solterra do some light off-roading.

With 184.6inches long, 73.2inches wide and 64.9inches tall, the Solterra is very similar to the Forester. Although it is about two inches larger than Subaru’s small crossover, the Solterra has a wider wheelbase of 7 inches (112.2 inches). The Solterra has excellent back space and flat foods that make it possible to comfortably seat five.
A dedicated EV platform is the backbone of Solterra, BZ4X and other platforms. Toyota led the development of this platform. Subaru, however, was selected for its all-wheel-drive system expertise. The familiar “X-Mode” terrain selection system for AWD models will be featured on both cars. Subaru has called its platform the eSubaru Global Platform or eSGP. Toyota’s version is called the eTNGA.

They share a common platform and have similar exterior styling. While some of the details such as grilles or headlights differ, they have a nearly identical shape with a sharply curved rear glass and an angular nasal. It is not necessary to have black cladding at the fenders. This makes Solterra appear more rugged and awkward.
The Toyota has announced the powertrain specifications and battery characteristics. All models come with 71.4kwh of battery packs. Customers can select from either a front wheel-drive engine with 201 HP or an allwheel drive system with 214 HP. U.S. specs for the Subaru don’t make mention of FWD, so it appears only the AWD version of the Subaru will make it to the U.S.. Subaru didn’t mention acceleration or top speed figures, but we know the BZ4X offers 0-62 mph acceleration times of 8.4 seconds with FWD and 7.7 seconds with AWD. The Subaru should be similar.

Subaru claims a range exceeding 220 miles. But, it didn’t give any charging information other than the possibility of fast charging. We can also infer that the Toyota will allow charging up to 150 kilowatts, which allows for a charge of 80% in just 30 minutes. Subaru didn’t mention the roof-mounted panel. It will also be offered in select markets on BZ4X. The feature could increase range and power other features.
Both vehicles are identical inside, with the same dashboard and 12.3 inch touchscreen. The center console swoops to the top of each dash. The steering wheel has an elevated digital instrument panel that sits behind it. This is because the upper half of the panel is cut off by the top. In the BZ4X, the optional steering yoke would solve that problem by removing the top of the wheel but Subaru hasn’t made any mention of a yoke thus far.

The production will take place in Japan and China. We’ll get more details on pricing, official EPA range, and trim details closer to when the Solterra goes on sale next year.
