Although the Mercedes-Maybach GLS was launched exactly two years ago, engineers and designers are already at work on an updated version of this SUV. This prototype we spotted in Europe is lightly camouflaged.
The most luxurious variant of the GLS will go through mild visual updates in order to stay up to date and in line with the more modern S-Class. Starting from the front, the seven-seater looks virtually unchanged, featuring Maybach’s unique grille and bumper design, although this might be the case only for this early prototype with more changes coming to later models.

This is also true for the profile, where you can clearly see multispoke 22 inch wheels with electronically reclined side steps that allow easier ingress and egress. The rear end has changed with the camouflaged portion of the bodywork surrounding the taillights. While the shape of the horizontally-arranged lighting units appears to be similar, the LED graphics are now different.
Rumours suggest that the new model will have updated graphics in the digital instrument cluster as well as the central touchscreen, which is equipped with the latest MBUX software. The GLS will eventually inherit the screen layout from the S-Class. It has also made its way to the SL. However, this small facelift might not bring about such a major change. The possibility exists that the Maybach GLS may get the three-spoke steering wheels from the sedan.

The GLS 600’s twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 produces 550 hp (558 PS / 410 kW) and 730 Nm (538 lbft). It is mated with the EQ Boost 48 volt mild hybrid system, which can produce an extra 22 hp (16 kW / 23 PS) of power as well as 250 Nm (184 lbft). There may be minor improvements in power and fuel economy across the entire range.
The updated version of the heavyweight Mercedes-Maybach isn’t expected before early 2023, when it will compete with the likes of the facelifted Bentley Bentayga, the brand new Range Rover, and the higher trim levels of the upcoming BMW X7 facelift.
