Chevrolet Malibu Code X Is A Custom Coupe With A Camaro Face From China

Chevrolet celebrates its 110th Anniversary at 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show. They made it look just like SEMA. In fact, the US automaker brought seven modified cars in China, with five of them based on the humble Malibu. With a Camaro front, Chevy Malibu code X Coupe stands out.

The US-spec ninth-generation Malibu was introduced back in 2015 with the facelift following in 2018. The Chevy Malibu is also launched in a slightly different version, called the Malibu XL, in the Chinese market. Besides their love for sedans, Chinese customers have a thing for tuned show cars which explains why Chevrolet prepared quite a feast for them at the Guangzhou Auto Show.

It is hard to see the Code X being a Malibu from the beginning, because of the many visual modifications. The model appears to be sharing only its roofline and green-house with the production version.

Camaro’s full Camaro convert includes an ZL1-style bumper and prominent carbon-fiber splitter. A bonnet scoop and darkened headlights were added. Due to its narrow tracks, and the large wheelbase that betrays the Malibu roots, the 3/4 view shows this car isn’t a Camaro. Although the doors are not compatible with this door panel, wide fenders were added on each axle.

The rear door delete is adorned with faux vents that look like they are from the Camaro-faced Malibu. The suspension is so low that shiny aftermarket wheels have difficulty fitting in the wheel arches.

With the Camaro-tinted taillights and original trunk lines, the rear end looks equally bizarre. This car is a true show vehicle. Finally, the rear bumper was redesigned and now features a carbon fiber diffuser, DTM-style blades, quad exhaust pipes, as well as a new rear bumper.

We don’t know what hides under the bonnet of the Malibu Code X but we really hope it is not one of the stock units. It is possible to get the China-spec Malibu XL with a Turbocharged 1.3-liter or a Naturally-Aspirated 1.5-liter. The turbocharged 2.0 turbocharged 2.5-liter is also available. However, none of these units is strong enough for this level of visual drama.
