Great Wall Motors Flabbergasts Us With China’s First Supercar Pickup Concept

Supercar Pickup Concept, Great Wall Motors won the title of weirdest premier at 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show. Although it’s based on King Kong Cannon’s production car (what an awesome name), its ultra-wide bodykit and lowered suspension give it the appearance of something out of Fast and Furious.

Starting with the base model, the Great Wall King Kong Cannon is the Chinese brand’s latest pickup designed as a rival to popular models like the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger. Behind the emphatic name hides a standard dual-cab design with toned-up fenders, a large chrome grille, and LED headlights reminiscent of the Tank 500 SUV.

Great Wall Motors created a variety of concepts cars to make the King Kong Cannon more appealing for Chinese customers. The most attention-grabbing of them all is the Supercar Pickup which supposedly takes the truck to another level in terms of style and performance – even if Great Wall shared nothing about the latter.

The Supercar Pickup is low-rider and sits just a little above the ground. It has wider tracks, more road-focused Continental tires and lots of negative camber to make it ready for racing. Only the side windows and doors are still easily recognisable. Wide fenders with integrated gills, aerodynamic side sills, and a spoiler structure on the rear bed have been added to boost King Kong’s visual appeal alongside black wheels with yellow rings.

The aggressive front bumper will make you forget anything you know about approach angles since a complex array of intakes, splitters, and fins make Audi’s latest RS 3 Sportback look like an entry-level hatchback. The headlights have chrome-finished claws and intakes beneath them. A sporty bumper extension dominates the rear with dark-tinted lights, quadruple exhaust pipe, and a diffuser.

Unfortunately, Great Wall Motors didn’t publish any details on what’s under the Supercar Pickup’s bulged bonnet. And for all we know (and let’s be honest here, suspect), it could be hiding one of the standard model’s uninspiring turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel engines or nothing at all.

We should mention other King Kong Cannon-based concepts, including one that is more likely to be used as a rescue vehicle in natural disasters and another focused on agriculture, with a drone attached and machinery under the rear. The production pickup has only 500 kg (1.102 pounds) payload, which is about half the amount you’d get in a Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi L200 or VW Amarok. It also comes with half the weight of an Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Hilux, and VW Amarok.
