In the aftermath of an accident, you may have to face some difficult decisions — potentially including what to do with your now wrecked car. Fortunately, you have plenty of options.
Here are five things you can do with a wrecked car.
1. Fix It
How “wrecked” is your car?
Believe it or not, even if you total your car, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to haul it off for scrap.
Totaled means the cost of the repairs exceeds the value of the car — meaning if you want to, you can fix your vehicle.
That said, repairing a severely wrecked car can be a time consuming and expensive undertaking. So, it’s not a viable option for everyone. But, if your vehicle has a lot of sentimental value, know that fixing it is probably an option.
2. Don’t Fix It
Once again, how “wrecked” is your car?
After an accident, your car may look pretty banged up, but that doesn’t’ mean it’s not still in working condition. Superficial damage, no matter how severe, only affects the appearance of your car and does not necessarily mean it needs any real repairs.
So, if your willing to drive around in something that looks like a wreck, then you may want to consider just keeping your car and not bothering with any repairs.
3. Junk It
If your car is past saving, or if you don’t want to have to worry about dealing with it, then you may want to consider junking it.
Some junkyards will buy your vehicle from you to salvage and sell off any parts; they may even come and haul away your car if it doesn’t run, for a small fee.
4. Donate It
Donating a wrecked car may sound a little underhanded, but it’s surprisingly a fantastic way to help out those less fortunate.
Donating your car does not mean passing your wrecked vehicle off to someone who may not have the means to fix it.
When you donate your vehicle, the organization you give it to may do several things with it, such as pulling parts from it or selling it to use the funds toward other causes.
5. Sell It
This one may sound a bit shocking, but it is possible to get money for your wrecked car.
If you have a vintage or specialty car, you may be able to sell it off to a collector or specialty repair shop for parts. Or, if it’s fixable, you might be able to sell it to someone willing to fix it.
That said, one of the easiest ways to get cash for a wrecked vehicle is by selling it to companies that buy cars running or not.
